Free Time

Ahhhh - free time! Time to relax, listen to musc, read a book, chat with a friend, window shop... We all need it and each of our programs offers it but the amount of free time and how you can use it varies from location to location.

Our programs have low, medium or high levels of supervision (for details visit our Supervision page) and there is usually a correlation between the level of supervision and how much free time you will enjoy on the program.  As a rule:

  • high supervision programs are very structured and tend to offer a limited amount of free time which you are expected to spend on campus or at your homestay. You are not allowed to leave the campus or your homestay unchaperoned.
  • medium supervision programs are less structured and usually offer a few breaks during the day and one or two afternoons and/or evenings per week where you are free to leave campus or your homestay with friends to explore your host city (rules for leaving campus unchaperoned apply). At all other times you are expected to be with the group participating in lessons, meals and organized activities/excursions.
  • low supervision programs have a low level of structure and typically offer free time whenever you are not in class. You are free to use this time as you please to explore the host city or other destinations nearby.

Obviously, your parents will have some say in the level of supervision that is right for you, but if you would like to have some time to enjoy your destination city unchaperoned, you should consider a medium or low supervision program. On the other hand, if you would feel more comfortable being under the watchful eye of staff at all times, a high supervision program is best.  But keep in mind that you have to accept the level of supervision and amount of free time that your program allows as exceptions are not allowed, regardless of age.
